The Vineyard
The Champenois Vineyard

The Appearance of a champenois Vineyard

To many people ignore the Champagne area and they only imagine it with his long monotonous plains. They ignore that at Paris’ gates, there is a magnificent vineyard.

The Vines stretch on 200 Km of beautiful bare hills. This location is very favorable to northen vineyards because they are always sunny and well aired on soils who properly drain and are less exposed than the plains and the spring frost.

Generally the vineyards are exposed est or / and south but there is all expositions, south for some vineyards in the Marne Valey and the coast of Whites; but we can find some on the north slopes, where they are called "upside down" not the least since it is about the fine wines of Mailly and Verzenay (this seems paradoxical for a northern vineyard. But it explains if you consider that the Reims’ Mountain constitues an ensemble of his soils a shelter against unfavorable winds for the vineyard...).

If the trees are welcome on the dominanting plateau of the vineyard, in the vineyard they are banished because the vines fear their shade and are afraid of their competition in the distribution of the soil ressources. No ornamental comes to break the stock, who cut at the same high are lined up like a parade. It does not stand for monotony impression, the pieces of the vines are all different. The orientation of their lines alters with the soil because they are generally drive to the way of the slope, shaping this way a gigantic patchwork which the colors vary according to the sanitary state of the vine, the soils maintenance and their development stage.
